Alarm Management

Alarm Management

Alarm Management’ - the alarm overload challenge and its impact on day-to-day operations, safety onboard vessels, and human factors aspects.

Throughout the history ships have relied on the watchful eyes of the seafarers. Todays watchkeepers have become highly reliant on human-machine interaction. Sensors and other control elements work continuously to detect degradations or abnormalities and alert any to the watchkeeping officer typically by the provisioning of brightly coloured and noisy alarms, engineered to immediately attract the attention of any human in its vicinity.

Crews keep vessels safe not because nothing goes wrong, but because they continuously recognize, absorb, and adapt to disruptions. Alarms are meant to protect operations – yet onboard vessels they can also compete for attention, drive mode confusion, and push decision-making toward fast, habitual responses.

Human Factors design problem: How do we set people up for success (or failure) through technology, procedures, organization, and context.

Presenters (Preliminary program):

Asger C. Schliemann-Haug, Lead Data Scientist, Lloyd´s Register

Thomas Koester, Psychologist, Senior Human Factors Specialist, FORCE Technology

Standard Ferries - Standard Færger

NOTE: Event will be conducted in Danish

The Danish “Standard Ferry” project, initiated by the Danish Ferry Secretariat (Færgesekretariatet), has been underway for several years, and the re-tendering process is expected to be launched in the summer of 2026.

As the average age of Denmark’s domestic ferry fleet continues to increase, and as the green transition places growing financial and political pressure on operators that continue to rely on fossil fuels, the need to replace ageing vessels with new and more sustainable ferries is becoming increasingly urgent.

Nete Herskind will introduce the Danish Ferry Secretariat and outline the challenges municipalities face in ensuring reliable ferry services to Denmark’s small islands. She will also provide insight into some of the responsibilities associated with operating ferry services as part of a municipality’s broader public service obligations. The Danish Ferry Secretariat represents 18 municipalities, five of which participate directly in the Standard Ferry project.

We will also hear from Søren Bach-Hansen, Chairman of the Steering Committee of both the Danish Ferry Secretariat and the Standard Ferry project. Drawing on his role as Head of Business Development (Erhvervschef) at Svendborg Municipality, he will explain the broad political support behind the Danish Ferry Secretariat and the Standard Ferry project. Despite significant challenges during the development of the Standard Ferry project, including the cancellation of the first tender process, the project continues to move forward. Søren Bach-Hansen will provide the latest status update and share key lessons learned from the initial tender round.

OMT will then present a general update on the vessel designs as they stand today and explain the considerations behind them. While the concept is reflected in the name “Standard Ferry”, local requirements, route characteristics, weather conditions and operational needs necessitate different solutions from one ferry service to another.

The Danish Ferry Secretariat was established in 2015 as a result of a political agreement between the Danish Government and Local Government Denmark (Kommunernes Landsforening – KL). Today, it has 18 member municipalities and supports ferry services to 26 Danish islands. Its primary purpose is to assist municipalities with ferry operations—an area that typically falls outside their core responsibilities. In addition to initiating and managing the Standard Ferry project, the Secretariat supports its members through recruitment, education and training, procurement, knowledge sharing and collaboration between municipalities. The organization is headed by Nete Herskind, Head of Secretariat, and is guided by a Steering Committee composed of representatives from several of the member municipalities.

Retrofit for energy efficiency and decarbonisation

Retrofit for energy efficiency and decarbonisation

The transition of the global fleet to lower greenhouse gas emissions is a significant challenge. Beyond the difficulties in securing the necessary new fuels, shipping companies face complex and critical decisions within a short timeframe. They must determine the best way to adapt or renew their vessels. Since ships typically have a lifespan of 20–25 years, the transition cannot rely solely on replacing vessels as older ones are phased out and scrapped. There will also be a need to retrofit part of the existing fleet.

The decision on whether retrofitting a ship is worthwhile is often based on the payback period. However, including the climate accounting for the two options—retrofit or newbuild—can provide a different perspective. Retrofitting existing ships, for example, from diesel engines to run on gas or methanol, has so far only been implemented to a limited extent. This is due to both the high costs and the technical challenges involved in the process.

This evening's session will explore the retrofit of a ship from diesel to methanol operation, featuring insights from both the shipping company and the engine manufacturer.

You will also be introduced to an innovative tool designed to help shipping companies evaluate the climate impact of retrofitting an existing vessel versus constructing a new one. We'll discuss how this tool has been applied in real-world decision-making within a shipping company, offering practical insights into its effectiveness.

Finally, we will delve into an empirical study examining the performance of energy efficiency technologies retrofitted on containerships, providing valuable data and analysis on their impact on operational efficiency.

Christmas special - Maritime accidents

Join us for this special Christmas event, giving very insightful knowledge to maritime accidents.

Marine accidents and incidents can happen at any time. They are rarely caused by a single event, but instead usually trigged by several factors that could be totally unrelated, often occurring over a lengthy period due to failure of safety barriers and risk prevention measures in place.

The maritime industry, and not only in Denmark, has a long-standing tradition making use of the insights and lessons learned from the comprehensive reports issued by the national Marine Accident Investigation Board, following the most serious cases.

During the event we will delve deeper into the complex subject, before the traditional Christmas “æbleskiver” being served.
